About the event: RUN ON THE ROOF OF AFRICA! Kilimanjaro Trail Run is 4 high altitude racing events on Africa’s tallest mountain. The terrain is as unforgiving as the scenery is spectacular! KTR takes place over a weekend, September 2-3, 2023, with races scheduled to take place on different days. ULTRA 74 Our 74 kilometer ultra is a loop race from Simba Farm (1760m / 5770ft) to a high elevation at Kilimanjaro’s Moir Camp (4170m / 13680ft) and return. The Trail 74 is identical to the Trail 67, only more difficult (and more beautiful!), with a 7km extension via Shira 2 (3900m / 12800ft) and Moir Camp. We race the course clockwise direction in even years and anti-clockwise in odd. In 2023 racers will climb on the Lemosho trekking route and descend via the Shira rescue road, passing through farmland, rain forest, and heather / moorland zones. Total climbing for the KTR Ultra is 3030 meters (9940 ft). This event is absolutely not to be taken lightly, as the combination of climbing, high altitude and unpredictable weather can be extremely difficult. Additionally, the cutoff for the KTR Trail 74 is 13.5 hours, which requires exceptional fitness and determination. The Trail 74 is limited to 100 runners in 2023 | Start Saturday, 2nd September 6:00 ULTRA 67 Our 67 kilometer ultra was previously our longest race, but now exists as a shorter version of our Trail 74. It’s a loop race from Simba Farm (1760m / 5770ft) to Kilimanjaro’s Cathedral Point (3850m / 12600ft) and return. We race the course clockwise direction in even years and anti-clockwise in odd. In 2023 racers will climb on the Lemosho trekking route and descend via the Shira rescue road, passing through farmland, rain forest, and heather / moorland zones. Total climbing for the KTR Ultra is 2850 meters (9350 ft). This event is not to be taken lightly, as the combination of climbing, high altitude and unpredictable weather can be extremely difficult. Additionally, the cutoff for the KTR Trail 67 is 12 hours, which requires some real work. The Trail 67 is limited to 100 runners in 2023 | Start Saturday 2nd September 6:00 FULL MARATHON The full marathon (42km / 26.2mi) is a point to point race with alternating up and down years. 2023 (and all odd years) is uphill. The race will begin at Simba Farm (1760m / 5770ft) and climb via Kilimanjaro’s Lemosho trekking route to Cathedral Point (3850m / 12600ft) prior to descending to the finish line at Morem (3410m / 11190ft). Up years consist of 2750 meters (9000+ ft) of climbing and 1100 meters (3600 ft) of descent. Either direction racers enjoy running through multiple climate and vegetation zones — farmland, rain forest, and heather / moorland. This event ends at Morem, and so requires vehicle transport from the finish line back to the race village. Cutoff is 9 hours, and the 2023 event is limited to 60 runners. | Start Sunday, 3rd September 6:30 HALF MARATHON The half marathon (21km / 13.1mi) is a loop run on Shira Plateau, featuring double and single track in the heather and moorland zone. The first 10 kilometers are via rescue road, and the second half of the race on progressively more technical trails. The race features 510 meters (1700 ft) of climbing, with a high altitude point of 3850 meters (12600 ft). This event begins and ends at Morem (3410m / 11190ft), and so requires (early morning) vehicle transport for participants to the race start. The KTR Half is a great entry race into high altitude running, or a superb way to hike fully supported for a day on Kili. We welcome hikers in the half marathon. Cutoff is approximately 7.5 hours, and the event is limited to 60 participants in 2023. Start Sunday 3rd September 7:30 (6:15 departure) TRAVEL PACKAGES We off travel packages pre or post race dates.
